EDIT: evidently that’s how the piston-valve horns do look… I still can’t fathom how you play it…

Actually, that IS a mellophone. This is a traditional mellophone, which is basically the same as a French Horn, but with piston valves.

The modern (or marching) mellophone looks like this:
